Maison Margiela Couture Show Reminds Us of Picasso ... and a Snapchat Filter

John Galliano never ceases to surprise. For his latest couture collection for Maison Margiela, the designer debuted an artful collection that reminded us of both Picasso and Snapchat.

On the runway, models showcased sheer veils with silhouettes of, for example, an eye, a nose, and a mouth, reminiscent of Picasso’s Cubist paintings. The theme was carried over onto the garments themselves.

One piece in particular bore a striking resemblance to the ubiquitous Snapchat filter featuring a rainbow tongue, suggesting that Snapchat is, literally, everywhere. Another featured a pristine, ivory-colored long coat — overlaid with an enormous portrait of a beautiful woman in black tulle, perfectly scrunched and stitched.

Other looks included tattered and cutout garments and accessories, such as a trench coat, white shirt, trousers, hats, all playing off Picasso’s Cubist distortions.

Galliano is famous for creating whimsical, surreal, and sometimes wacky looks. His couture collections have included materials from burlap to plastic wrap, and even a distorted skull painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The designer spent most of his career with his own label, then worked at Givenchy and Christian Dior, before Dior ousted him in 2011 for making anti-Semitic and racist remarks. He made his comeback to fashion by joining Maison Margiela in 2015.

Make what you will of the collection, but there’s no denying that Galliano will always give us something to talk about.
