Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut The Lost Daughter, an adaptation of best-selling author Elena Ferrante's novel of the same title, will launch on Netflix later this year.

The film stars Oscar winner Olivia Colman, BAFTA-winning Normal People actor Paul Mescal, Chernobyl's Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson and Peter Sarsgaard. Oliver Jackson-cohen, Ed Harris and Succession's Dagmara Domińczyk also feature in the cast.

The drama follows a woman (Colman) on a beach holiday which takes a dark turn when she begins to confront the troubles of her past.

Maggie has adapted the script based on Elena's 2006 novel and will also serve as a producer on the project.

Elena is revered for her much-loved series of Neapolitan novels - My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child.

"I'm thrilled to be working with Netflix again," Maggie said in a statement. "They have supported so much of the work I am most proud of, and this is no exception. Netflix has consistently championed filmmakers that excite and inspire me and I'm delighted to be included in that company."

Endeavor Content's Deborah McIntosh and Negeen Yazdi added: "We are honoured to be part of this special journey with Maggie, her extraordinary group of collaborators, and now our new partners at Netflix, to bring this powerfully complex story to audiences around the world."

Filming began in Greece 2020, and the film will debut at the Venice Film Festival in September.
