From Cosmopolitan

Earlier this year, show creator Ryan Murphy teased the theme for the next instalment of American Horror Story and we were immediately hooked. The first-look picture showed a pair of hands that appear to be trying to get out of the ocean, prompting fans to speculate about season 10 featuring mermaids or a ghost ship.

"Things are beginning to wash up on shore...," it was captioned. The teaser came not long after Murphy revealed Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin had joined the cast of season 10. The show will also see the return of the OGs, including Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates and Lily Rabe. In addition to the above, Leslie Grossman, Angelica Ross and Finn Wittrock will also be appearing in the series.

What do we know about American Horror Story season 10 plot?

The plot is still a mystery *but* Ryan Murphy's latest teaser - a new poster - is a big clue. Tagged Provincetown, Massachusetts, the image shows a gaping mouth with pointy fangs.

Fans suggested lots of theories in the comments, but one particular guess has stood out: "I'm calling it now - Google 'the black fish' Provincetown Mass, you're welcome!"

Naturally, we did some Googling and it's about a 'bizarre entity' or 'tall creature' that lurked around Provincetown and was mostly seen by children.

While previous fan theories suggested it could definitely be ocean-related. Fans also thought one of his teasers connected to a theory about legends.

One fan wrote on Reddit:

"So I think that season 10 will probably be like my Roanoke Nightmare, a TV show where people go to a place where people have been terrorized by a monster (bigfoot, other urban legends I guess?) and maybe this season will connect to roanoke if they ever go to the Roanoke house, which is technically an urban legend. let me know what you guys think! also this theory is just IF ahs season 10 is called urban legends."

Meanwhile, speaking to Deadline back in November 2019, Murphy shared: "We flirted with aliens, we flirted with space, we flirted with some things that were more interesting than others.

"I think that at the heart of it, it’s always about Americana. It would be hard to do something like that idea you mention, not that I wouldn’t."

Without giving too much away, Murphy did appear to hint that the series will try and cater to what the fans want, continuing: "The fans write in what they want, and they’re very excited about the Coven stuff and the aliens in season 2. They’ve always wanted something in space. It’s always a mysterious process of how I come up with the idea. I really don’t even understand it."

Why might the American Horror Story season 10 theme have to change?

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Murphy said the theme of the upcoming season might have to change. Speaking to The Wrap in May, he explained that "a lot of what I was going to shoot was dependent on a very specific moment, it was a weather-dependent show."

We guess that confirms the ocean-related theme then, right?

He added: "So now I don’t know. I don’t know what we’re going to do. I don’t know what I’m gonna do next with that show. I don’t know if I’ll accelerate another season or wait until next year to shoot this one."

Despite the changes, he promised that it will still be an explosive season. "Everybody is kind of on pause. I honestly don’t know. But it’s a great season and I know all the actors are chomping at the bit to get into it, so that’s all I know."

But does the new November poster mean he moved away from the ocean theme and settled on something else? So many questions!

Who will star in American Horror Story season 10?

As mentioned above, Murphy has brought back all the fan favourite actors for the upcoming series. Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Adina Porter, Lily Rabe, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, Angelica Ross and Finn Wittrock will all be starring in season 10. And Macaulay Culkin will of course be making his AHS debut. Is anyone missing from the line-up? We know Emma Roberts and Cody Fern won't be appearing in the series.

When will American Horror Story season 10 be released?

There hasn't been any official confirmation yet, but American Horror Story only started production in October so we've got a while to wait. In August, Ryan Murphy told fans: "Looks like American Horror Story Season 10 is go for an October (fitting) production launch. Thanks to everyone who is working hard to assure a safe start for the cast and crew. And yes this is a clue.” Once it finally lands on Fox, it traditionally drops on Netflix a year later.
