The second biggest controversial debate in the scone world – after "scone" as in "stone" or "scone" as in "gone" – has been tackled head-on by Marks & Spencer...
We're, of course, talking about the ongoing conflict between the Devonshire method (cream first, jam on top) vs the Cornish (jam first, followed by cream) way of preparing the tasty afternoon treat.
Yep, M&S has decided to combine strawberry jam and clotted cream to create brand new Strawberry Clotted Cream, which is ideal for scones and, the supermarket claims, promises to silence both sides of the debate.
Combining milk from Guernsey and Jersey cows, the silky cream has been combined with sweet strawberry compote and mini fruity pieces. Hailing from Langage Farm in Devonshire –masters of clotted cream for over 40 years – this will be the first strawberry clotted cream the farm has ever made, exclusively for M&S.
It not only promises to be a game-changer for scones, but we can imagine it sandwiched in a scrumptious Victoria sponge, as well as in eclairs and cream buns. And, if you're totally wild about strawberries, you could even dip the fruit straight in it.
April Preston, Director of Product Development at M&S, said in the release: “Jam first or cream first? There’s no doubt this question makes for a healthy debate amongst cream tea fans up and down the country. I’m a proud Devonian, so up until now I’ve always slathered my cream on first, before adding jam. Now, all I need is our Collection Strawberry Clotted Cream to have the best of both worlds; it is quite simply heaven on a scone. ”
We can't wait to try it!
M&S Collection Strawberry Clotted Cream is available nationwide in M&S stores for £2.50 (200g).
