Where’s your first port of call on the high street for high-quality trends at an affordable price? It’s hard to think of anywhere better than M&S, which has undergone the most remarkable of glow-ups lately, and that includes its own-brand beauty, from GH-loved £3 haircare to fragrances that smell far more expensive than they are.

The M&S Discover perfume line, in particular, is already a beauty insider secret, with fans claiming that the chic bottles offer a very affordable alternative to designer names. Not dupes, exactly, but fragrances that definitely overlap in perfume tastes – think of it as the scent equivalent of Spotify’s song-suggesting algorithm.

There’s now a new female EDT addition to the range, and shoppers are already comparing it to a famous name.

The latest to join the Discover fragrance family is Sweet Frangipani EDT, a light yet creamy floral that starts from just £6 for 30ml. (If you like to do your beauty maths, it’s worth knowing that another £4 will get you more than triple the amount, with a chunky 100ml bottle coming in at £10.) It’s well worth a sniff if you’re looking to update your fragrance wardrobe with a new spring scent.

Sweet frangipani

The juice inside is just as pretty and feminine as the pink colour suggests, with frangipani blooms mingling with soft, delicate rose petals. There’s also vanilla at the base to add warmth and longevity. We have it on our wrists right now and can detect it several hours after spritzing.

One impressed shopper says: ‘This is exactly the same as Gucci Rush, which is my fave-ever scent. Bought [this] on a whim and after one spray and an hour later (for staying power), got back online and bought another two bottles. Love, love, love it.’

While Gucci’s eau de toilette blooms with peony rather than frangipani, we’d say that fans of a vanilla-balanced floral will find both scents to their liking. Those who go for the M&S option may well be swayed by the price difference, with 50ml of the designer option costing £77.

The five-star recommendation was seconded by another early adopter, who writes: ‘I love this so much, frangipani is one of my favourite perfume notes and this captures it perfectly. There’s just a hint of rose and the vanilla adds to the creaminess of it. A lovely tropical perfume that’s perfect for the upcoming warmer months but could equally be worn all year round.’

Sweet Frangipani has found favour here in the GH office as well, with compliments on the light, sweet (but not too sweet) blend. ‘This is perfect for spring, I’d never have guessed it was that price,’ said one staffer.

When you’re next in the M&S beauty hall, we’d also recommend checking out these standouts in the Discover range.

This scent sold out after it was compared to Lancome’s La Vie Est Belle, with both scents sharing notes of orange blossom, jasmine, and patchouli. It’s now back in stock, which is good news for the superfan who says: ‘I’ve purchased over 20 bottles of this perfume over the years – I love it so much! It’s become my signature scent.’

The bottle will draw your eye (fans of a certain boutique-turned-blockbuster fragrance brand will know why) but the contents will win the heart of your mum, or whoever you gift it to. ‘Light’, ‘fresh’ and ‘lovely’ are among the reviews that perfectly sum up this limited edition scent of lily, rose and orange blossom.

Warning: definitely contains nuts! Pistachio has been quite the premium fragrance micro-trend, being spotlighted in D.S. & Durga Pistachio, KAYALI Yum Pistachio Gelato 33 and Experimental Perfume Club’s Pistachio Haiku to name a few. However, it’s Sol de Janeiro’s pistachio-laced Cheirosa 62 scent that the M&S Discover iteration is most commonly likened to. ‘Lovely fragrance. Smells very similar to Sol de Janiero… if you know, you know,’ says one shopper.

Another high-street option that’s been compared to high end; in this case YSL’s Black Opium. While the individual notes are different, the fragrances do share a certain warm, musky richness. ‘I bought this perfume since I had heard that it’s very like Opium, which I used to wear a lot. I like this one, too, it’s certainly similar, having the same style!’ according to one of the fragrance’s many five-star reviews.
