Lupita Nyong'o used eyeshadow on her lips for this golden look, and we're taking notes

The stars were shining brightly in Brooklyn at the 2018 CFDA Awards, including the ever-stunning Lupita Nyong’o. And while her dress and styling were absolutely perfect, we need to talk about Lupita’s shimmering gold lipstick. It turns out that her makeup artist, Nick Barose, used eyeshadow on Lupita’s lips to create that vibrant metallic shine. His experiment paid off, obviously, because she looked incredible.

Given that she wore a fiercely structured Versace mini dress at the 2018 CFDA Awards, it makes sense that Lupita’s makeup artist would want to translate that boldness into her makeup as well. Because Lupita is a Lancome Ambassador, her look was created with Lancome products, and we have all of the juicy deets.

Looking to recreate Lupita Nyongo’s gold eyeshadow as lipstick look?

Nick prepped the star’s lips with the Lancome Absolue Precious Cells Nourishing Lip Balm — blotting away the excess once it had been absorbed. He then lined her lips with Lancome Le Lipstique in Sheer Chocolate, which is a beautiful dark brown lip liner.

After lining Lupita’s lips, Nick applied a brown-toned gloss as a base (Lancome L’Absolu Lacquer Gloss in 286 Vertige) to help the shadow stick on properly. Using a lip brush, he applied a metallic bronze eyeshadow shade called Kissed in Gold from the Lancome Color Design 5 Pan Eyeshadow Palette. It’s also the same palette he used to create her eye look. (We love a multi-purpose product.)

Barose placed the shadow on the center of the lips and then blended it out a bit, adding more gloss on top. This stunning look is super customizable since you can play with the application of the shadow depending on how brightly pigmented you want it to be.

A consummate professional, Nick tested the look himself before getting our queen Lupita ready for her big night out.

This is a look we definitely won’t forget.
