It really is never too late to be yourself
After keeping it private for decades, the celebrities in this gallery finally proved that it's never too late to come out of the closet and live freely and proudly. - 2/11
Sir Ian McKellen
In his public life, the British actor famous for playing Gandalf in the 'Lord of the Rings' saga and Magneto in 'X-Men', is known for supporting human rights causes, however, in his private life, it was not until the age of 49 when he confessed his homosexuality. While he did not say he identifies as bisexual, he deserves a mention in our list for the candid words he said. He told Vanity Fair: "Being gay is probably one of the reasons I became an actor. I was never closeted with friends and colleagues in the professional theater, but I wasn't out to my closest blood relatives. The minute I came out, I felt immediately better in every way. I felt relieved that I wasn't lying.” - 3/11
Sara Ramirez
Best known for playing bisexual doctor Callie Torres on hit medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, the actress came out as bisexual when she was 40 years old. During her speech at an organization's True Colors Fund event, the actress said: "Because of the intersections that exist in my own life: Woman, multi-racial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican and Irish sides. I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard." Since Sara came out she has been actively involved in intersectional advocacy, including speaking at the Equality March in DC, as well as teaming up with Equality Texas in opposition of anti-trans policies, among other causes. - 4/11
Stephanie Beatriz
In an open letter to GQ back in June 2018, when she was about to turn 40 years old, the 'Brooklyn 99' actress - who has been married to Brad Hoss since 2018 and welcomed daughter Rosaline with him in 2021 - came out as bisexual and noted that being married to a man shouldn't make her any less so. She stated: "I’m bi, and I'm getting married this fall. I’m excited, nervous, terrified, and so fu***ng happy. I’m choosing to get married because this particular person brings out the best in me. This person happens to be a man. I’m still bi". - 5/11
Gillian Anderson
'Sex Education' and 'X-Files' star Gillian Anderson confessed in 2012, when she was 43, that throughout her life she has had intimate relationships with both women and men. She told Out Magazine: "I was in a relationship with a girl for a long time when I was in high school. If I had thought I was 100% gay, would it have been a different experience for me? Would it have been a bigger deal if shame had been attached to it and all those things that become huge life-altering issues for youngsters in that situation? It’s possible that my attitude around it came, on some level, from knowing that I still liked boys." - 6/11
Megan Mullally
When she was 47 years old, American actress Megan Mullally told The Advocate that she was bisexual. The ‘Will & Grace’ alum said: "Many of us don’t realize our bisexuality to any degree, and some of us realize it to one degree or another, and it’s just a question of where you’re at in your life and your awareness and that kind of thing. It doesn’t have to manifest as a sexual thing," she said in 2006. Megan has been married to ‘Parks and Recreation’ star Nick Offerman since 2003, and was previously married to director Michael A. Katcher. - 7/11
Jason Mraz
When the 'I'm Yours' singer wrote "I'm bi your side" in a poem for Billboard in honor of gay pride month back in 2018, when he was 41 years old, fans immediately began wondering of his sexuality. He responded the following to the same outlet: “Honestly, I didn’t realize it was going to be so telling. But I’ve had experiences with men, even while I was dating the woman who became my wife. It was like, ‘Wow, does that mean I am gay? And my wife laid it out for me. She calls it ‘two spirit,’ which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman. I really like that.” - 8/11
Cameron Diaz
When she was 41 years old, the former actress - who quit the business in 2014 after starring in the remake of 'Annie' - confessed one of her best kept secrets. During an interview on Bravo TV's 'Watch What Happens Live' show, the 'There's Something About Mary' star said she has had intimate experiences with other women, although she prefers not to label herself. She said: "What I really think is a problem is that for some reason everybody needs to label. There needs to be a label for something, and you have to qualify it with a label. If we didn't put these labels on ourselves, I think we would probably live in a much better society." - 9/11
Alan Cumming
The 'Instinct' star is another celebrity who revealed his sexuality past the age of 40. When he spoke about his bisexuality to The Advocate back in 2015, the Scottish actor who was then 50 years old, told the publication: "My sexuality has never been black and white; it’s always been gray. I’m with a man, but I haven’t closed myself off to the fact that I’m still sexually attracted to women.” - 10/11
Andy Dick
When the comedian and actor was 44 years old in 2009, he spoke on 'The Tyra Banks Show' and opened up to the model-turned-TV host about many of his struggles, including his developing sexuality and not feeling accepted by either the gay or straight community. He said: "I say, 'I'm bi, my love knows no gender,' and the straight community says, 'Oh right, that's just a cover-up - you're gay!' And the gay community says, 'Yeah right, that's just a cover-up - you're gay. They both want to push me gay.” - 11/11
Michelle Rodriguez
It was in 2013 when the 'Fast and Furious' star, then nearing her 40th birthday, confessed her preferences in an interview published in Entertainment Weekly. Michelle said: "I’ve never walked the carpet with anyone, so they wonder: What does she do with her vagina? Plus, I play a butchy girl all the time, so they assume I'm a lesbo. Eh, they're not too far off. I've gone both ways. I do as I please. I am too f**king curios to sit here and not try when I can. Men are intriguing. So are chicks."
