Dr Alex George has come a long way – from working as a doctor in a busy A&E department in Lewisham, to appearing on the fourth season of Love Island, to now receiving an exciting new appointment, from none other than Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The news was announced this morning and Alex took to social media to share his joy at landing the prominent new role of a mental health ambassador, which will see him advise the government on all things MH-related.

It's a topic close to Alex's heart and one he's spoken out about numerous times in the past, telling Cosmopolitan in a previous interview that he's a big advocate for therapy and found talking to be an incredibly helpful tool after appearing on the reality show. Recently, Alex has become even more vocal about the importance of good mental wellbeing, in the wake of the very sad death of his younger brother, Llŷr.

"The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has appointed me as the Ambassador for Mental Health," Alex told his 195,000 Twitter followers. "I will be working with the Government to make mental health a priority, for both current and future generations. Now more than ever we realise how fundamental this is. It’s time for change."

He also shared a lengthier update on Instagram, alongside a socially distanced photo with Boris:

"WE DID IT!! You called and the PM answered!! I have been appointed as the Ambassador for Mental Health," Alex wrote. "It hasn’t sunk in yet and I’m not sure it ever will. I am truly humbled... Never has mental health been more important than now. From schools to universities, the NHS and the wider public, MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS."

He also explained that the untimely passing of his brother is a driving force for him, when it comes to creating positive change surrounding mental health treatments and breaking the surrounding stigma. "Nothing will bring my brother back but if I can make a positive impact that saves even one life, it will be worth moving mountains for... I hope I can make my brother proud, we will do it together my boy 💙 LET’S DO THIS 👊."

Congratulations to Alex on the start of what will no doubt be a brilliant new journey – we're sure so many people will be helped along the way.
