Former Love Island contestant Theo Campbell has revealed the moment his eye was “split” in half by a champagne cork in a video shared on his Instagram story.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Campbell had lost vision in one eye following an incident with a champagne cork which occurred while he was on holiday in Ibiza.

On Thursday evening, the athlete shared a video on his Instagram story which was filmed seconds after the accident took place.

In the video, Campbell holds his face immediately following the unfortunate accident, covering his right eye as two men tend to him.

The reality television personality also shared a series of videos on his Instagram story which show him wearing bandages on his eye as he speaks from his hospital bed in Ibiza about how the accident came to pass.

Campbell explained that he had been at a party during his holiday where multiple champagne bottles were being opened and sprayed simultaneously.

The 28-year-old, who was wearing sunglasses at the time, was handed a champagne bottle, which resulted in some champagne being sprayed under his glasses into his eye.

When Campbell took off his glasses in order to wipe the spray out of his eyes, within a “split second”, the cork from a champagne bottle which had been shaken by a woman in the vicinity had hit him in the eye, he stated.

The Love Island star said the incident left him in “agony”, stating that the trajectory of the champagne cork had been a “bullseye shot”.

Campbell added that when he opened his eye, he was left with blood on his hand, leaving him to believe that his eye was a “goner”.

The runner was rushed to hospital and taken straight to theatre, where a doctor told him: “Don’t worry about seeing again. We’re going to try to save your eye.”

Seven stitches later, Campbell said is hopeful that he may still one day be able to see out of his right eye again.

“I think I might be able to recover,” the athlete said.

“If it doesn’t, if I can’t see nothing in four weeks, then yeah I might panic and cry, but until then, fingers crossed.

“I’m always the comeback king. Hopefully this is another comeback.”

Campbell added that the support he has received following his accident has been “overwhelming”.

On Thursday, the reality star’s partner, former Love Island contestant Kaz Crossley, shared a post on Instagram in which she expressed how “inspired” she feels by Campbell.

“Thank you for being unapologetically yourself, and being such an inspiration to many people,” Crossley wrote in the caption.

“You’re always looking at the positives and the fact you keep such high hopes when times are tough, I know we can get through anything.”

The NHS advises immediately going to A&E or calling 999 if an object hits your eye at a high speed.
