I was a Love Island fan but even Maya Jama can't save the ITV series

Love Island first graced our screens in 2015, with a group of ordinary singletons entering a tropical villa hoping to find love.

It was once the biggest show on television, attracting millions of viewers across the country with its stunning bombshells, awkward recouplings and shock dumpings.

And let's not forget the unforgettable personalities who have been catapulted to fame since starring on the show - the likes of Maura Higgins, Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury are all from season five alone.

We couldn't stop talking about it: who was coupled with who, when someone's head would turn, and anticipating the return of Casa Amor. But now, the show seems to have fallen from grace. The once exciting firepit and "I've got a text" chants have since become tired, resulting in an entirely predictable format.

The second season of Love Island: All Stars premiered last night (January 13), and whilst its viewership remains at a similar level, there isn't anything else that could possibly surprise or excite us anymore.

In a change from tradition, Maya Jama entered the South African villa first to greet the former Islanders as they arrived. Making small talk and jokes with the cast, all with a glass of bubbles in hand, it was refreshing to see the host interact with the group as if she were joining them on their journey.

But once Maya left, it was back to the usual small talk and awkward propositions to go for a chat on the day beds.

Season three couple Gabby Allen and Marcel Somerville came face-to-face for the first time since their messy split six years ago. Their reunion was perhaps one of the most exciting parts of the premiere episode, not forgetting Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu's bombshell entrance.

However, exes reuniting isn't groundbreaking for the show. We've already experienced the novelty of Callum Jones and Molly Smith having to navigate their past relationship in the All Stars villa last year.

In a genre that was once lacking, Love Island quickly established itself as a fan-favorite watch. Reality TV has since stepped up a notch, with The Traitors, Love Is Blind, and the return of Big Brother offering a fresh and lively format to tune into.

While some of the later seasons have seen genuine connections and deserving winners, like season nine champions Kai Fagan and Sanam Harrinanan, Love Island fails to keep our attention. Frankly, it isn't our type on paper anymore.

Love Island: All Stars airs Sunday to Friday at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX
