What could possibly be better than chips? Battered chips, of course! If you’ve not come across the West Midlands delicacy of Orange Chips, then I’m telling you now… you haven’t lived.

Orange Chips, which are a staple in the Black Country, are the greatest snack known to man. But apparently, a lot of people have never heard of them!

We were reminded of the battered chips when Poppy O’Toole aka Poppy Cooks on Instagram did a recipe video for them, and she realised that a whole load of people (I guess people not living in the West Midlands) had never come across these wonderful chips.

In her recipe video, professional chef Poppy shares how to make the battered chips. All you need is:

  • 3 Maris Piper potatoes

  • 1 whole egg

  • 5 tbsp sparkling water

  • 6-7 tbsp self-raising flour

  • A pinch of bicarbonate soda

  • 1 tsp turmeric

Then, as far as making them goes, you go about a lot of it like you would when making regular chips. You peel the potatoes, chop them into chip shapes, then par-boil them. But here’s where the magic happens… you then mix up the batter mixture and coat the chips in that delicious golden elixir, and into the fryer they go!

You can find Poppy’s full recipe here, and we really do recommend giving them a go.

Once you’ve had these, you may never be able to go back to regular chips. You have been warned…
