J. K. Rowling
In 2019, the ‘Harry Potter’ writer was seemingly cancelled after a transphobic Twitter controversy in which she spoke out at the silencing of female academics in the trans debate. Rowling wrote: "Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who'll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?" Then in December 2021, Rowling landed herself in hot water again with new transgender comments. She hit out against the police’s decision to log sex offenders as women if they identify as such. - 3/11
Dave Chappelle
Comedian Dave Chappelle got himself into hot water following the release of his Netflix special ‘Sticks & Stones’, saying that transgender people “hate my f****** guts” and that he doesn’t blame them because “I can’t stop writing jokes" about them. As if he had not received enough of a backlash, he got criticized again in 2021 after his special ‘The Closer’ premiered, in which he stated that the LGBTQ+ community is “too sensitive". - 4/11
Tracy Morgan
In 2011, a Facebook user documented on their social media platform part of the ’30 Rock’ star’s stand-up routine, saying that people are gay by choice, since “God makes no mistakes". Later on, Morgan issued a public apology on ‘The David Letterman Show’, saying: "I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville." - 5/11
Alec Baldwin
In 2013 a Daily Mail reporter criticized Hilaria Baldwin for tweeting during actor James Gandolfini’s funeral. This provoked her husband Alec to describe the reporter as a “toxic little queen". Later on, during an interview with The Gothamist, the ’30 Rock’ actor explained his comments by saying: "The idea of me calling this guy a 'queen' and that being something that people thought is homophobic … a queen to me has a different meaning. Kevin Hart
Kevin Hart stepped down from hosting the 2019 Academy Awards after old old homophobic comments surfaced that he had made between 2010 and 2011. In one Twitter post, Kevin stated he would break a dollhouse over his son's head if it turned out he was gay. In his 2010 comedy special, 'Seriously Funny', Hart joked about his desire to prevent his son from being gay. In one part of the routine he said he saw another boy “grinding” on his son, and in response, he “panicked and knocked them both down". Referring to his old routine, he told Rolling Stone: "I wouldn't tell that joke today, because when I said it, the times weren't as sensitive as they are now. "I think we love to make big deals out of things that aren't necessarily big deals, because we can." - 7/11
Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton faced a severe backlash after an audio recording of the heiress surfaced on the internet in 2012 in which she claimed gay men were “disgusting” Paris - who was in the back of a taxi with a homosexual man, that was showing her the gay dating app Grindr – said: "Gay guys are the horniest people in the world. They're disgusting. Dude, most of them probably have AIDS. ... I would be so scared if I were a gay guy. You'll like, die of AIDS." Paris later issued an apology statement in which she insisted she isn't homophobic. She said: "I am so sorry and so upset that I caused pain to my gay friends, fans, and their families. Gay people are the strongest and most inspiring people I know." - 8/11

In 2015, when Bruce Jenner came out as transgender, becoming Caitlyn Jenner, singer Drake Bell wrote on Twitter: “Sorry... still calling you Bruce." After the public made it clear they were not okay with what the Nickelodeon star wrote, he tried to clarify by tweeting: “I'm not dissing him! I just don't want to forget his legacy! He is the greatest athlete of all time." - 9/11
Azealia Banks
Azealia Banks seems to never be far away from controversy due to her outspoken nature. In 2016, Banks attacked former One Direction member Zayn Malik which resulted in Twitter deactivating her account after she called the LGBTQ+ community "the gay white KKK. Get some pink hoods and unicorns and rally down rodeo drive". She later issued a public apology on Facebook and vowed to never use the gay slur again. She said: "The amount of people that get hurt when I use the word vs. the amount of people I've said it to are just not worth it, "Honestly... This isn't a cop-out, it's just me realizing that words hurt. and while I may be immune to every word and be thicker skinned than most, it doesn't mean that I get to go around treating people with the same toughness that made my skin so thick." - 10/11

Rapper Eminem is well known for the use of explicit lyrics in his songs, but one in particular made headlines. In 2018 he released the song ‘Fall’, where he addresses rapper Tyler, The Creator, branding him a "f*****." Later on, in an interview with Sway on YouTube, Eminem admitted he regretted his use of the slur, saying: “In my quest to hurt him, I realized that I was hurting a lot of other people by saying it." - 11/11
Mel Gibson
Back in 1991, Gibson made very clear his opinions on homosexual men in an astonishing interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais. Mel stated: "They take it up the a** ... this is only for taking a s***. “With this look, who is going to think I'm gay? I don't lend myself to that type of confusion. Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?”
