London Fashion Week 1960s style revealed in vintage video clip

As the capital gears up for London Fashion Week AW13 we’ve unearthed some amazing footage from the fourth ever LFW – in 1964, when London was only just emerging as a style hub.

In the early 60s London was fast becoming a fashion mecca and this behind-the-scenes video reveals show preparation, now-vintage wedding styles and even models dancing the Charleston on the catwalk.

At the time London was considered a prime ‘ready-to-wear’ fashion market and of course the 60s saw the rise of iconic home-grown fashion brands such as Biba.

In the video we see a fab retro ‘sage green and white printed coat and suit’ worn with matching hat, extravagantly skirted dresses and models from the Susan Small agency showing off their dance moves  - and their rather stylish cloche hats (as seen at New York Fashion Week in 2013).

Flamboyant (male) stage directors and designers show the female models how to move gracefully in the clothes as well as demonstrating dance moves to perform on the runway – something we’re not expecting at this spring’s LFW.

Keep an eye out for the ‘Matador Panties’ (no, we’re not quite sure what they are either) and wedding dresses that would have set you back less than £40 at the time. We particularly love the sleeveless, embroidered silk dress that wouldn’t look out of place on the runway this season.

The video shows a much slower-paced event than today’s organised mayhem, and we love the grace and style the models show, even while having a boogie.
