Liverpool Fan View: Four talking points from the 4-1 win over West Ham

Mohamed Salah celebartes after scoring against West Ham at Anfield

Salah draws level with Kane

Mohamed Salah’s incredible debut season at Liverpool continued with his 23rd Premier League goal of the 2017-18 campaign. The Egypt international moved level on goals with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane following his second-half strike. Salah netted for the sixth successive game with a low finish into the net following exciting build-up play from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Roberto Firmino. The Premier League’s golden boot remains a realistic target for Salah.

Best and worst of Emre Can

Emre Can’s future may be up in the air but Jurgen Klopp’s faith in the German midfielder hasn’t been dented. The 24-year-old is set to become a free agent in the summer but remains a regular in the Liverpool team. Can opened the scoring with a deft header from a corner to net his sixth goal of the season. That’s his best return in a single campaign since moving to Liverpool.

His lofted pass allowed Roberto Firmino to make it 3-1 in the second half. However, the Germany international remains a divisive player. His critics question his ability to become a commanding midfielder for Liverpool. Can overran the ball and lost possession to allow Michail Antonio to score a consolation goal for the Hammers. It was the best and worst of Can on display.

104 and counting

Most Liverpool supporters would consider the 2013-14 season as their best in the Premier League era. Yes, it had a heartbreaking conclusion but Liverpool played some wonderful football under Brendan Rodgers. Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, aka SAS, helped the Reds to score 110 goals in all competitions. Indeed, Liverpool netted 101 league goals to break a century for the first time in the Premier League era.

Can’s opener took the Merseyside outfit’s tally to 100 goals in all competitions under Jurgen Klopp on Saturday afternoon. By the end of 90 minutes, Liverpool were on 104. While Salah has been prolific, his levels of brilliance aren’t quite at Suarez levels. But Klopp’s current team is sure;y on its way to becoming Liverpool FC’s best attacking unit since the Premier League began in 1992.

Improving Karius

While Liverpool ran out comfortable winners, Loris Karius was required to make a number of important saves. The German shot stopper is growing in confidence since Klopp named him Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper over the past couple of months. Karius had to be alert to tip Marko Arnautovic’s ambitious chipped shot onto the crossbar in the first half. The 24-year-old avoided any mishaps in goal to underline his growing status at Anfield.
