Lewis Capaldi has shared a cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Driver’s License’, recorded at Abbey Road Studios – listen below.

The Scottish singer-songwriter recently returned with single ‘Forget Me’, his first new music in nearly three years, following his 2019 debut album Divinely Uninspired To a Hellish Extent.

Capaldi has now released a stripped-back version of Rodrigo’s mega-hit ‘Driver’s License’ for Spotify Singles, released alongside an acoustic version of ‘Forget Me’.

‘Forget Me’, meanwhile, immediately soared to Number One in the UK singles chart, while the music video – a shot-for-shot recreation of Wham!’s ‘Club Tropicana’ video – currently has 6.2 million views.

Speaking about the new song in a press statement, the singer said: “I’m back. My new single is called ‘Forget Me’, and let’s just be honest here, lyrically it covers a lot of the same ground as before. I meet lady, lady leaves me, I whine about it in a pop song. Textbook.

“After I was able to finally f****** move out of my parents house in 2020 after the success of ‘Someone You Loved’ and ‘Before You Go’, I thought it’d be wise to ring up my pals TMS again and see if they fancied writing some more tunes after I realised I’m contractually obligated to make more music for a large corporation. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

“It’s a wee bit more upbeat than my previous numbers, mostly because after touring the world, I noticed that my lesser known slower tracks were making some of the crowds look like they were about to fall asleep out of sheer boredom. However, this new one is sad AND fast, much like my love making. Not to worry, I’ve still got plenty of depressing ballads up my sleeve. More on that another time…”

Last week, the singer reflected on the instant success of the new track. “1086 days since I’d release ‘Before You Go’, 9 days short of being away for 3 years exactly and having no idea what to expect, coming back in what in music years these days feels like a f****** eternity,” he wrote in a statement shared to Twitter.

“Honestly can’t tell you how much it means, every single one of ya who gave it a listen or sent a message on here these past few weeks means more to me than you’ll ever know.”

He continued: “3rd number 1 tune now all of us have together joining ‘Someone You Loved’ and ‘Before You Go’ which is absolutely f****** wild to say the the least. After so long away and all the nerves I’d had making the song and getting it all ready this one feels absolutely unreal. Thank u all so so much!!!!”

Elsewhere, Capaldi recently spoke out about his Tourette syndrome diagnosis.
