Line of Duty episode 5: Who died? Viewers think old trailer reveals Kate Fleming’s fate
Line of Duty viewers think that a trailer for the remainder of the series has spoiled the ending of the latest episode.
The latest instalment of the BBC drama was broadcast on Sunday (18 April) and, as has become the norm for the crime series, ended on a huge cliffhanger.
However, viewers were quick to point out a shot from the trailer that seemed to reveal the fate of key characters involved in the tense ending.
*Spoilers follow – you have been warned*
Episode five saw DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) lured to a lorry park by DS Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) so that PC Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper) could kill her.
After realising her life is in danger, Kate draws her gun at Ryan, who has his aimed at her. Holding him back from firing is Kate’s revelation that both Ryan and Joanne are under observation, and that AC-12 are on their way.
Kate orders Ryan to drop his gun and the episode ends as a gunshot rings out, leaving viewers wondering who fired their weapon.
As the episode finished, though, some viewers posted a still from the old trailer showing both Kate and Joanne with their hands in the air in what appears to be the lorry park.
The same trailer also features a close-up of Kate yet to be shown this series. As Ryan is nowhere to be seen, fans are deducing that Kate kills Ryan.

If you want to believe the trailer (scenes not broadcast yet) you need not worry about Kate Fleming
But #LineOfDuty has the habit of offering up red herrings pic.twitter.com/bW3Gw5Fnhu— nazir afzal (@nazirafzal) April 18, 2021
Backing up the theory that Kate is alive was Ted Hastings actor Adrian Dunbar, who hinted at the character’s fate during a Good Morning Britain interview on Monday (19 April).
While this could certainly be the case, it wouldn’t be the first time that creator Jed Mercurio has planted scenes in a trailer to throw fans off the scent.
Mercurio has openly admitted to using red herrings in the latest series in regards to the identity of the final member of H, the crime syndicate made up of corrupt coppers.
If Kate does kill Ryan, it will no doubt put her back on the list of possible H suspects.
Elsewhere in the episode, a background post it note revealed a shocking detail about how Joanne is related to Tommy Hunter.
Line of Duty continues next Sunday (25 April) at 9pm on BBC One. Find our rundown of the episode’s big events here.
