Enjoy travelling back in time to the dark alleyways and teeming slums of Victorian London?

Then new thriller The Limehouse Golem, based on Peter Ackroyd’s 1994 novel Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem, could be right up your (fetid, blood splattered) street.

The film, directed by Juan Carlos Medina and scripted by Jane Goldman, tells the story of detective John Kildare (Bill Nighy), who must track down a brutal serial killer in the riverside Limehouse district of London in the late 19th century.

As the trailer makes clear, however, he soon begins to suspect that treachery is afoot.

Meanwhile, the apparent bloodlust of the murderer is so strong, local residents soon begin to suspect the killer must be an inhuman "golem", a sinister supernatural being.

Alongside Nighy, who replaced Alan Rickman in the lead role after the latter's illness and death last year, the film also stars Olivia Cooke,  Douglas Booth and  Daniel Mays.

The Limehouse Golem is released in the UK on September 1.
