See Lily James as Pamela Anderson in 'Pam & Tommy' trailer
Lily James has undergone a dramatic transformation for her upcoming role as Pamela Anderson. The actress – who stars in the new series Pam & Tommy – is almost unrecognisable as she perfects her character in the official trailer.
Pam & Tommy, coming to Disney+ subscribers this week, will focus on Anderson’s relationship with Tommy Lee and is described as being set in "the Wild West days of the early internet". The storyline will look specifically at the couple's sex tape scandal, which occurred after a private movie was stolen from their home following their 1995 honeymoon. The couple famously sued the video distribution company, Internet Entertainment Group, and eventually the case was settled out of court, confidentially.
Sebastian Stan (known best for his role as Bucky Barnes in the Avengers movies), plays Lee, while Seth Rogan has been enlisted to play the role of the man who stole the sex tape, Rand Gauthier. Orange is the New Black's Taylor Schilling co-stars as Gauthier's porn-star wife, Erica, while Parks and Recreation alumni Nick Offerman plays adult film producer "Uncle" Milton Ingley.
Gauthier, who was a former porn-star himself, had been working as an electrician when he discovered the footage that he subsequently went on to sell after installing a security system at Lee's home.
James has shared several teasers for the series on her Instagram account, documenting her uncanny physical transformation into Anderson during filming. She perfected Pammie's trademark dramatic eyeliner, blonde locks and pout – and quoted the Baywatch star in one of her posts, writing: "It’s great to be blonde. With low expectations it’s very easy to surprise people."
In another snapshot, James appeared to be recreating Anderson's iconic look from the 2002 American Music Awards with a smoky eye, nostalgic frosted lipstick and a chainmail top.
She's also been seen filming scenes wearing Anderson's iconic red swimsuit from Baywatch, the TV show that made her a world-famous star.
In a recent interview, James defended the sexual content in the series - which has been given an 18+ rating - describing the more intimate scenes as "essential".
"We really felt that the sex scenes had to be a part of the story and had to be essential to the script and progressing their relationship and looking at what happened," she said. "It was a really great constant conversation and nothing was set in stone."
While Anderson hasn't spoken publicly about her thoughts on the show, her close friend Courtney Love has discussed her concerns surrounding the project in a since-deleted post on her Facebook page. She spoke specifically about the way the show will likely bring up a significant level of past trauma for her long-time friend, and revealed she has denied the producers permission to use her own likeness.
The first episode of 'Pam & Tommy' will air on 2 February and stream weekly on Disney+ in the UK. Watch the trailer above.
