Ever since the first episode aired at the start of October, Emily In Paris has been the subject of a wholeee lotta stick.
The new Netflix show, which sees Lily Collins play lead role Emily, has received what can only be described as, uhm, rather mixed reviews.
Scathing criticism initially came from Parisians claiming that the show was a stereotypical American adaptation of Paris full of cliches. Ouch.
Now, everyone is up in arms about Emily's age in the show, something that Collins divulged in a recent interview with British Vogue. “I don't believe we’ve ever given her a specific ‘number’ for her age, but I believe that she’s pretty fresh out of college,” she said. “Maybe this is her first year after graduation. I want to say she’s like, 22-ish.”
Lilly continued: "She’s had enough experience at her company in Chicago to have earned the respect of her boss. She’s a smart cookie and really innovative – and this is not her first rodeo doing what she does. She’s gone to school for this, and she’s completed internships."
"However, she’s not the person who travelled during college. She was really, really focused on her jobs in the Midwest, and I don’t think she’s been abroad. Basically, she’s always kind of been a big fish in a small pond – and then suddenly in Paris she’s a fish out of water."
Um, hold the phone for just a sec. We don't know about anyone else, but we are struggling to see how a 22-year-old could hold a masters degree and have completed various internships?? Something doesn't seem to add up.
Understandably, after this rather wild revelation, the wonderful people of social media were just as baffled as us. Here's what they had to say...
So she’s 22 with a master’s degree in communications or marketing? No one noticed how many times they changed her masters degree? I know it’s fiction but doesn’t make sense irl https://t.co/ybnaMHoeuW— Katherine Abando (@kaband0) October 15, 2020
Um @lilycollins, I’m not sure how to tell you this but a 22 year old with a master’s degree AND relevant work experience is either a genius who graduated college at 18 or is lying about her age... #EmilyInParis https://t.co/Gm1qEp0deR— Dana Alyss (@DanaAlyss) October 15, 2020
I thought the same thing. Lily of course looks a bit younger than her age but I still assumed that Emily is 28-29. She seems experienced in her field of work & she mentioned that she has a master’s degree.— 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐚 𓀎 (@Noraa___x) October 17, 2020
While the world seemingly struggled to come to terms with this confusing announcement, Lily set the record straight and admitted she had made a mistake in the interview. PHEW.
Emily looking at me when I get her age wrong 😂 Sorry girl. You might not be 22, but I gotta say - you do act like it sometimes!! pic.twitter.com/PqX4yWmQvK— Lily Collins (@lilycollins) October 16, 2020
Updating her fans via Instagram Story on Friday and posting to Twitter, Lily shared a GIF of Emily giving a sassy looking side-eye with the accompanying caption: “Emily looking at me when I get her age wrong 😂Sorry girl. You might not be 22, but I gotta say - you do act like it sometimes!!!”
Glad that's been cleared up. Now, does anyone actually know how old Emily is orrrr...?
