With bank holidays, a royal wedding and with any luck, some warmer weather around the corner, Lidl is bringing back one of its most popular alcohol products just in time for the start of summer.

The retailer's own-brand Citrus Garden gin is returning to stores this week, after its debut appearance proved to be very popular last year.

Part of Lidl's Hortus range, the £15.99 spirit is distilled in England and is described as 'subtly fruity' with notes of rosehip, hibiscus, orange, lemon and bergamot peel. It's said to pair well with barbecued foods like grilled prawns and chicken skewers and is best served with ice and a slice of lime.

Fans of this citrus-spiked gin will be pleased to hear it will be a permanent addition to Hortus range, which already includes the award-winning Original London Dry Gin.

And as no good gin is complete without tonic, it will launch alongside the new classic and light mixers priced at £1.99 per pack of four. Three new limited edition tonic flavours – Mediterranean, Elderflower and Aromatic – will also be rolled out, starting with Scottish stores first.

The new arrival comes after the latest figures released by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association revealed that a record 51 million bottles of gin worth almost £1.4 billion were bought in the UK in 2017. The organisation credited the phenomenal sales to the rapid growth in UK distilleries and the increasing number of gin brands.

It doesn't sound like the nation's taste for the juniper-based spirit is dwindling, either. Once export sales are added to those in the UK, gin is "within touching distance of becoming a £2 billion industry," the WSTA says.

Lidl's Hortus Citrus Garden gin, £15.99, arrives in stores on 4 May.
