Claire Ingle Finch heads up the boutique consulting agency Finch & Partners. Her leadership role sees her oversee large projects across a widespread array of sectors, from entertainment to food and publishing. She works with brands to strategically develop their trajectories and all while steering a team through one of the most difficult 18 months of business.

Here, she shares what she has learnt from her many years of leadership.

The three most important qualities for a good leader are…

"Motivate, listen, empower..."

My personal strength as a leader is...

"I lead from the front with no fear and this allows my team to believe anything is possible. I believe that there are no barriers to the level of your own creativity."

The biggest priority for my business right now is…

"To adapt, to grow, to keep building and creating new avenues and to be at the forefront of change while still maintaining profitability."

The economic outlook may be uncertain, but I’m mitigating risk by…

"I ensure that we are keeping standards high and that we are constantly building new avenues of revenue and creativity. Through all of this, I also ensure that we continue to work with the best in class."

I keep my team motivated by…

"I have a clear vision of where we are headed and what we are trying to achieve together. I am also always prepared to have the tough conversations that are sometimes needed, in the hope of inspiring them to reach for bigger and to go higher."

The hardest decision I’ve had to make as a leader was....

"Letting go of an idea that wasn’t right for the business."

The worst mistake I’ve ever made as a leader...

"Don’t control too much. I have learnt over time to empower and step back and as a result I have seen my team shine even brighter."

An effective leader will always…

"Listen, empower, inspire, build..."

An effective leader will never…

"Abuse their position in any way."

My role model for leadership is…

"There are so many amazing leaders from politics, tech, the arts, past and present - each with different approaches. Some of my favourites include Michelle Obama, Melinda French Gates, Sheryl Sandberg, the Queen! But more often than not, it's my friends with businesses they are building, big and small, that inspire me the most."

The one piece of advice I’d give to a new leader is…

"Breathe! Take a step back from certain situations that arise and find perspective."
