Les Dennis confirmed as temporary Countdown presenter

Les Dennis has been confirmed as Anne Robinson's replacement on Countdown – at least for a little while.

Dennis said he was honoured to step into the role as he confirmed the news on social media on Sunday (July 24).

"From 4th August until 15th I shall be hosting the iconic @C4Countdown. It is such an honour. Hope you enjoy," he posted on Twitter.

Les Dennis starred as Michael Rodwell in Coronation Street between 2014 and 2016, when he was written out after suffering a heart attack and being left for dead by the evil Pat Phelan.

Dennis has previous presenting experience too, having presented Family Fortunes from 1987 until 2002.

Robinson announced in May that she would be quitting the show in order to be able to spend more time with her family, revealing in a statement that she had stayed on the show for longer than she had originally signed up for.

The presenter joined the quiz show last year when she took over from The Apprentice's Nick Hewer, becoming its sixth presenter and the first woman to don the title.

After Robinson's departure, BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Colin Murray temporarily filled in as host while the hunt for her permanent replacement carried on. He had previously filled in when then-host Nick Hewer took time off in 2020 to shield during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sharing the news on Twitter back in May, he wrote: "I'm like the assistant manager, given the job until the end of the season.

"Absolute honour. Fave show ever. July 14 to start of Nov. #Countdown," he added.

Countdown airs weekday afternoons on Channel 4.
