Len Goodman: Strictly is very sensual, it doesn’t surprise me that couples fall in love

Strictly Come Dancing has a habit of making its dancers fall in love.

Flavia Cacace announced her engagement to fellow dancer Jimi Mistry earlier this year – whilst Kara Tointon famously got together with partner Artem Chigvintsev in Strictly 2010.

We had a chat with Len Goodman, who’s the head judge on both Strictly Come Dancing and the US version Dancing With The Stars, who told us it comes as no surprise to him that dancers fall in love on the show as they spend so much time training together.

“The thing is you are together as a couple for a long time, aren’t you?” he told Yahoo! Lifestyle.

“Hours upon hours, days after days… I think if the professional is single and the celebrity is single, what does it matter? Great! That’s lovely.”

It’s no wonder 68-year-old Len gives couples on Strictly his seal of approval as it was dancing that brought him and his first wife together in the first place.

“That’s how I met my first wife [Cherry Kingston] - dancing. We were dance partners together and we were dancing and we went out together and eventually we got married,” he said.

“But the problem was, once we stopped dancing, that was the end of it all! But that’s how it is,” he laughed.

Len also explained that dancers on the hit BBC show are in extremely close proximity of one another and that body contact can make dance partners become lovers - as was the case with Kristina Rihanoff and Joe Calzaghe back in 2009.

“Of course it is [very sensual], you’re up close and personal, you’re touching one another, you’ve got body contact and everything else, things happen,” he said.

Len – who described his December wedding to long-term companion Sue Barrett as ‘a lovely day’ – even suggested taking up dancing if you’re looking for The One as it’s a good way to get out there and meet people.

It worked for Strictly Come Dancing professionals Ola and James Jordan, who eventually married after meeting as dancers.

“The thing is, if you’re single and you’re looking for someone, the best thing you can do is go ballroom dancing, or go dancing, meet people of the opposite sex. You start dancing, you start to meet people…” he said.

The Strictly judge, who’s the face of EDF Energy’s Safe, Warm and Well campaign, said that we could work together on a new, barn-dance style dating experience where couples meet, dance and move on.

“It could be like speed dating! Mingle it with dancing as well, have a dance with this one, move along, 10 minutes, move on…” he joked. “What a business, eh?”

Now that’s a dating service we’d be happy to try.
