You know what, as challenging and long and boring as lockdown life has been for us all, it's also bought with it some unexpected moments of Zoom-based joy. Not long after Twitter gifted the world with Jackie Weaver and her now infamous parish council meeting comebacks, we're now lucky enough to be blessed 'the lawyer stuck as a cat'. I know, what a time to be alive!

In all seriousness though, the video of Texas court proceedings held over video call, featuring lawyer Rod Ponton stuck behind a cat face filter, is truly one of the only things getting us through this chilly Wednesday. It's a joy from start to finish.

The meeting kicks off with the 394th Judicial District Court judge, Roy Ferguson, letting Rod know that everyone could see his unfortunate feline error. "Mr Ponton, I believe you have filter turned on in the video settings," said the judge, to which the lawyer explained that his assistant was doing his best to amend the settings.

Keen to press on with his work, Rod then said, "I don't know how to remove it, I've got my assistant here... trying to... I'm prepared to go forward with it, I'm here live." He then added, "I'm not a cat!"

Naturally, Twitter has since produced a million and one funny responses to the whole saga (side note: did Rod ever escape his furry filter prison? NEED TO KNOW). Even Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid's Tale, chimed in with a funny quip about how she's actually a cat trapped behind a human filter:

Others shared how much the clip had made them laugh and provided some light relief during lockdown. "Laughed so hard I actually started crying 💀 62849 days into lockdown and I've finally cracked over a Zoom cat filter," wrote one.

Another added, "Zoom Cat Filter Video is flawless. Makes it all worth it. The internet, everything. Just a guy at the absolute end of his rope saying “I- I’m not a cat.” It's all worth it. I feel alive."

Tweeting about the incident afterwards, judge Roy Ferguson said the video was shared for educational purposes and commended Rod for his dedication to his clients throughout the pandemic.

"IMPORTANT ZOOM TIP: If a child used your computer, before you join a virtual hearing check the Zoom Video Options to be sure filters are off. This kitten just made a formal announcement on a case in the 394th (sound on)," Ferguson wrote.

He added, "These fun moments are a by-product of the legal profession's dedication to ensuring that the justice system continues to function in these tough times. Everyone involved handled it with dignity, and the filtered lawyer showed incredible grace. True professionalism all around!"
