Unearth your fascinator because Royal Ascot starts this week. The annual regal horse-racing festival, which is attended by the Queen and other senior members of the royal family, runs from Tuesday 19 to Saturday 23 June at the Berkshire race course.
The hospitality on offer differs depending on which ticket you opt for but, all in all, the food has a tremendous reputation. In the Queen Anne enclosure there's the 1768 Grill and Tea Rooms, while in the Royal Enclosure, there's the Windsor Greys restaurant. Then, of course, there are the boxes, where acclaimed chef Raymond Blanc is just one of the brains behind the VIP menu.
Though the eateries serve fine-dining food amid all the betting and racing, what could be more quintessentially British than combining a day at the races with afternoon tea?
Here’s what’s on the menu, which has been designed by Ascot’s executive chef Gemma Amor and Head Chef Ben Duston:
In the boxes, sandwich fillings include: poached Scottish salmon with dill and crème fraiche, free-range egg mayonnaise and cress, cucumber with cream cheese and chive and free-range chicken and coronation mayonnaise. Then you have your classic buttermilk scones paired with Highgrove strawberry preserve and Cornish clotted cream. And let's not forget the cakes... Guests in the boxes can expect raspberry and orange battenberg, caramel choux, strawberries and cream financier, chocolate crémeux and the British staple, Victoria sponge, which of course goes wonderfully with a selection of tea.
In both the Queen Anne Enclosure and Royal Enclosure, there’s an amuse-bouche of smoked king prawn and rock-lobster cocktail as well as spiced tomato and caviar aioli. The sandwiches are the same as in the boxes, as are the scones and some of the cakes. However, those in the 1768 tea rooms can enjoy a salted caramel éclair and traditional fruit loaf as well as English summer berries and pouring cream, all for £45. If you wanted to take your afternoon tea experience up a notch, you could add champagne into the mix for £10 more.
Now, where did we put our best dress and binoculars?
