2021 is going to be a big year for Lashana Lynch. Not only is she appearing in the highly-anticipated new Bond film (currently scheduled for release in April), but she’s also preparing to film a remake of a much-loved classic.
Lynch is set to join the cast of Netflix's musical film adaptation of Matilda. She will play the good-natured Miss Honey, as featured in the original 1988 novel by Roald Dahl.
The film follows the well-known story of a young girl named Matilda, who has the gift of telekinesis, and who uses her power for good against her mean parents and terrifying school principal, Miss Trunchbull.
Netflix's production will draw on both the 1996 film adaptation and the 2020 stage show Matilda the Musical, according to Variety.
The musical’s director, Matthew Warchus, will helm the film, while original playwright Dennis Kelly will adapt the screenplay, featuring music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
This year, Lynch will also star opposite Daniel Craig in the latest Bond thriller, No Time to Die. She's the first Black woman to play 007 in the history of the iconic spy franchise.
"The conversation around not wanting 007 to be a woman was great, because a conversation was being had - I think that was a great start," she told us as part of our new Master the Art video franchise. "This is probably one of the most powerful and poignant conversations that the franchise has had, and is very relevant to where we are today and the world that we've been growing towards for a long time."
