Laptops could be banned on flights to America as early as today

The Trump administration could ban electronics such as laptops for travellers on flights from the UK as early as today, sources have claimed.

Speaking to the Daily Beast, Homeland Security officials said that passengers from the UK and Europe would be required to check laptops and other large devices into the hold.

So passengers who are not bringing checked luggage will not be able to carry laptops to America, The Register reported.

Officials would not confirm that the ban would take place this week, but said, ‘It is under consideration.’

The ban would be similar to the one which currently affects travellers from Middle Eastern countries, sources told the Guardian.

Passengers are prevented from taking any devices larger than a mobile phone into the cabin – in response to intelligence about a terrorists ‘smuggling explosive devices in various consumer items’.

Anyone flying from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia already has to put devices into the hold.

More than two million passengers per year are affected by the ban – which applies to airlines including British Airways, Thomson, Thomas Cook and Easyjet.
