The breathtaking first trailer for Kristen Stewart's Princess Diana biopic has been unveiled.

Spencer takes place during a desperate Christmas holiday period in 1991, where Diana was on the verge of ending her marriage to Prince Charles.

This first teaser reflects the claustrophobic environment Diana endured, as the elegant gowns laid for her are juxtaposed with the Princess of Wales locking herself away from the royal family in a bathroom.

A montage showcases both the terror and agony of her life at that particular period of time, from rushing through the open fields on the Windsors' property to endless hounding from the paparazzi.

"They know everything," she's told, only for Diana (in the only bit of dialogue in the teaser) to respond: "They don't."

Spencer comes from Chilean director Pablo Larraín, who previously dramatised the aftermath of the 1963 Kennedy Assassination in the Academy Award-nominated Jackie.

The ensemble for Spencer cast includes Poldark's Jack Farthing as Prince Charles and Once Upon a Time's Amy Manson as 16th century queen consort Anne Boleyn, plus Harry Potter's Timothy Spall and Mission: Impossible's Sean Harris.

Describing the movie earlier this year, Stewart promised that it will sensitively explore the trauma Diana experienced over her decision to walk away from the monarchy.

'Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,' Stewart said of the drama back in January.

'It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.'

The movie will receive its world premiere next week at the Venice Film Festival, so expect first reviews to land then.

Spencer will premiere in US cinemas on November 5. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
