The first picture of Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in new movie Spencer has been unveiled.

The upcoming Pablo Larraín movie will see the Twilight star portray the late Princess of Wales over the course of one crucial weekend in Sandringham with the Royals.

There, she decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles – and in the first picture, we see Stewart look virtually unrecognisable as Diana.

Spencer's synopsis reads: 'December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales; marriage has long since grown cold.'

'Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There's eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.'

Harry Potter's Timothy Spall, Paddington's Sally Hawkins and Mission: Impossible's Sean Harris also star, while Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight has written the screenplay. Filming has now begun, with an autumn 2021 release date pencilled in.

'Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,' Stewart explained.

'It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.'

The actress previously to opened up about taking on the role to Digital Spy, saying: 'I always just thought that this person was sort of stolen from us and I always had a curiosity about her. Every day that I unfold this story, the more emotionally invested I get.'

Diana was most recently portrayed by Emma Corrin in season four of The Crown, which documents her and Charles' meeting and the subsequent breakdown of their relationship. Elizabeth Debicki is due to take over the role in the Netflix series going forward.
