Kristen Stewart's Princess Diana biopic Spencer finally has a UK release date.
The eagerly-anticipated film takes place over one specific weekend in the early nineties - when the late royal decides to end her marriage to Prince Charles, during one of her final Christmas holidays with the royal family at their Sandringham estate.
According to Variety, the movie will be released in UK cinemas on November 5th, and have its UK premiere at the BFI's London Film Festival on October 7th.
Stewart has received glowing reviews for her "tender" and "mesmerising" portrayal of Diana in the drama written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, and directed by Chilean director Pablo Larraín, known for his work on the critically acclaimed 2016 Jackie Kennedy biopic, Jackie, starring Natalie Portman.
Deadline's review read: "I can't say enough about Stewart's performance, steering from an impression of an impossibly well-chronicled figure to beautifully achieving the essence of who she was. It is a bracing, bitter, moving, and altogether stunning turn, taking Diana down roads we have not seen played out quite like in this mesmerising portrayal."
Spencer had its world premiere at the recent 2021 Venice Film Festival, and speaking at a press conference at the event, Stewart revealed: "I took more pleasure in my physicality making this movie than I have on anything. I felt more free and alive and able to move — and taller, even."
Larraín previously said that ultimately, his biopic is about identity: "Diana is such a powerful icon, where millions and millions of people, not just women, but many people around the world felt empathy toward her in her life. We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen. She’s a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realises that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles.
"It’s about finding herself, about understanding that possibly the most important thing for her is to be well, and to be with herself and by herself."
Spencer will arrive in UK cinemas on November 5th.
