The female jurors of the Cannes Film Festival 2018 are the gifts that just keep on giving. After just a few days of the annual festival in the South of France, Ava Duvernay, Cate Blanchett and the like have already taught us how to wear suits and pledged to do their bit for equality in the film industry.

What more could you want, right?

Well, you might not want it, but what Kristen Stewart has given us is the quiet, yet impactful, return of the rat tail plait.

Arguably not the most glamorous of hairdo names, the rat tail evokes the sort of horror only rodents and Euro '94 football players can inflict, however, the actress has given the style a surprising fashwun makeover.

We’ve seen miniature plaits cropping up for a while now, notably adorning many of the models at Roberto Cavalli’s SS17 show.

In line with the 70s inspired collection, tiny braids were tucked behind the ears of models, amidst tousled bed-heads and psychedelic earrings.

Bringing the look to 2018 in no less than two separate hairstyles, Stewart somehow avoided the boho overtones of the minute plait, elevating the look from Woodstock to wow.

In the first look of the day at the Cannes jury photocall, hairstylist Peter Lux had neatly engineered the braid at the nape of the actresses neck, underneath a tight bun and a magnificently quaffed quiff.

Later, at the opening gala of the glamorous festival, he kept the manicured ‘tail’, however Lux tightened up the quiff and transformed the bun of hair into a 40’s victory roll work of art. Genius.

Stewart, ever the red-carpet maverick, may have just done the unexpected and made us want a rat tail..maybe.
