The Kitchen Accessory That Belongs on Your Walls (It's a Storage Hack!)

Pink bedroom in colorful Brooklyn apartment

I live in a tiny studio apartment, and I like to think that I’ve become pretty good at finding organizing solutions that are also nice to look at. While some things are hidden behind doors and cabinets — like my closet bins and under-sink organizers — others, like my rolling cart and storage baskets, are always on view. I may need them to declutter my space, but I also make it a point to choose organizers that blend in with the rest of my decor.

I’m willing to do more research for a product that checks both boxes, but sometimes it seems like fate when I stumble across them online. (It’s actually the TikTok algorithm, but tomato-tomahto.) I knew as soon as I saw this viral hack where a user turns a crochet doily into accessory storage that I had to re-create it in my space. It’s everything I want in an organizer: It makes items easy to find, takes up zero space, and it looks like a work of art.

What Is the Doily Storage Hack?

Maybe I’m a little late to the party — a few commenters said they’ve spotted this idea on Pinterest over the years — but better late than never. I just can’t get over how smart this repurposing idea is! Just by nailing it onto the wall, you can transform a decorative place mat into an incredibly useful organizer. You can hook everything from dangly earrings to sunglasses to necklaces through the holes in the lace.

Because I don’t have room for a dining table, I didn’t have any doilies on hand to get the look right away (much to my disappointment). Thankfully, the universe was looking out for me a few days later as I was wandering around an estate sale, where I unearthed a gorgeous crochet piece. (If you don’t want to leave it up to the thrifting gods, this one is the same size as mine, has that vintage vibe, and has great reviews!)

I’d been dealing with an overflowing accessory collection for far too long, so as soon as I was back home I got out my hammer and put this baby on the wall. I still need to grab some more nails from the hardware store (as you can tell from the photo below), but so far it’s been getting the job done and looks stunning while doing it. I’ve used it mostly for sunglasses and eyeglasses (I’ve squeezed in as many as seven or eight pairs); they rarely ever get lost now, and not once have they fallen off!

I’m tempted to copy the viral video even further by attaching some hooks to the bottom of the doily for more necklaces and bracelets. I think this $15 organizer would be perfect! You could also add some tiny S hooks and accomplish the same thing — or simply thread your necklaces through the lace and secure their clasps. (It’ll just take a bit more work to remove them!) Regardless, my doily has already become my favorite organizer in my apartment!
