- Ethiopia's Shura Kitata and Kenya's Brigid Kosgei both spoke about their winning performances at the Virgin Money London Marathon press conference this morning.
Both runners put in spectacular performances at the elite-only Virgin Money London Marathon yesterday, Shura Kitata winning his first London Marathon, with a time of 2:05:41 and Brigid Kosgei winning her second London in a row in 2:18:58.
When speaking about her second London victory Kosgei, 'I was really really happy because last year I was position one and this year I was position one again. I did my best and finished good. Of course, the weather was difficult but I tried my best and was the winner. I'm happy with my race and I'm happy again to be a winner.'
Speaking via a translator, Kitata said, 'First of all, 2018 I got a lot of experience for yesterday's win'.
When asked about how he felt taking Eliud Kipchoge's title yesterday, Kitata said, 'Kipchoge is the greatest person in this sport. He did in his life more than science - he ran sub-2 hours. Kipchoge has changed our sport. He is our hero. He is our winner. Even though I am happy with my position yesterday, in my heart, he is still our champion.
'Today he didn't win, but tomorrow he can win the London Marathon and the Olympics. I appreciate what he did before and he is still my hero. Kipchoge is the king of us, even if we beat him. Today and tomorrow, he is king of athletics.'
When asked if he thought he could beat Kipchoge again, Kitata said 'today I cannot say I can beat Kipchoge. If I can prepare in a good way, we can race each other and that day we will see the result. That one we will leave to God and God can give us out position that day.'
Speaking of his early experiences running, Kitata said, 'My family are farmers. In this rural area my home was far from the school, 5-6KM every morning and evening I ran. I started that point and from there the school organised some races and I won most of those races. In my family everyone was encouraging me to run, but I did not think I would get to this position.'
