It was the moment we have been waiting months for: Kim Kardashian arrived at the 2022 Met Gala, and stole the show in a vintage, Bob Mackie 'naked' dress – which was once worn by none other than Hollywood royalty Marilyn Monroe. Naturally, her new beau Pete Davidson was on her arm for the occasion.

Kardashian modernised the classic look with a bleach blonde, slicked-back hairdo, paired with sparkling diamond earrings and a white fur jacket. But the star went relatively minimal (for her tastes at least), letting the iconic dress shine.

According to The Sun, the dress was last sold at auction in 2016 for an astonishing $4.8million. In a Facebook-live interview with Vogue, Kim revealed that she didn't originally fit into the dress – and had to lose 16lbs for the occasion, which she managed to do by cutting out carbs and sugar for three weeks.

Following the Met Gala, TMZ posted a video which showed Kim Kardashian in one of her final fittings for the dress – and an ingenious moment in which the star and Ripley's team used a very clever technique to fasten the dress.

The precious dress encountered some resistance when it came to zipping up over Kim's derrière, but as any alterations to the dress were forbidden, the team had to come up with something else: in this case, securing the zipper with a piece of string to keep it open. And to conceal it? Kim had the lightbulb moment of draping a white fur coat around her – just like the one Marilyn had also worn.

The newly-divorced star has marked her return to the iconic steps of the Met in serious style, having last attended the Met Gala in 2021 – in *that* incognito look.

Last year's theme was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion', and Kardashian made quite the entrance in an all-black custom Balenciaga look which completely obscured her face, leaving only her iconic silhouette for fans to recognise her by – and a major, 75-inch, floor length ponytail. It was one of the most memorable looks of the evening (if not all time), and a bold move from one of the most photographed women in the world.

TMZ reported that Kanye West encouraged Kardashian to do the controversial look. Multiple sources said, 'he gave Kim the courage to push the envelope with creativity and people's imagination through art,' as per TMZ. Kardashian was ultimately joined on the red carpet by Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia.

The look spawned countless memes and endless criticism, with some saying Kardashian looked like a 'dementor' while others claimed she hadn't adhered to the strict Met Gala dress code. Kardashian soon hit back, however, in an Instagram post to her 253 million followers saying: ‘What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!’

Kim Kardashian's Met Gala looks have become increasingly experimental over the years, with past 'fits running the gamut from the 'couch dress' to the stunning wet naked dress to the gold Versace moment.
