The new narrative-based spinoff series will see JJ and his friends encountering new experiences and milestones while navigating the big emotions that come with them
CoComelon is taking its young fans on an exciting new adventure!
The popular Netflix animated series for preschoolers is set to premiere a spinoff series next month called CoComelon Lane. In a big development, the show will feature characters JJ and best friends Cody, CeCe, Nina, Nico and Bella speaking to the audience directly for the first time.
Using music, learning and humor, the nine-episode, narrative-based series will see the children tackle new experiences and milestones such as getting their first haircut and making a special meal with their grandfather.
Each episode will follow the same structure, with the preschoolers encountering a big moment — and a big emotion that comes with it. Then JJ and his friends will engage in a "pretend paint" sequence.
"They'll imagine the scenario of the BIG moment together while JJ 'paints' what they imagine," Netflix teased in a release.
A trailer for the new series teases one of the big life milestones one of the kids will face — riding the school bus for the first time.
"We're all waiting for the school bus. Today is Nina's first bus ride," JJ says of his friend, who at first reacts with an excited squeal before expressing a bit of nervousness.
Led by JJ, the group begins to imagine what the bus ride will be like in order to prepare Nina for the new experience. Using his magic "Ladybug Light," JJ visually paints the imagined scenario for his friends and the viewers watching along.
With the help and guidance of various caregivers, JJ and his friends will be taught to name and validate the emotions they feel. They'll learn a strategy for how to handle each emotion via a lesson that is woven into an adapted nursery rhyme, CoComelon classic tune or new original song.
CoComelon Lane is designed for kids and parents to watch together in order to spark conversations and foster social-emotional learning. According to the release, the new series "aspires to partner with parents looking to model ways for preschoolers to understand and regulate the emotions they may feel about new experiences."
CoComelon Lane also explores the theme of community and family as the kids make deeper personal connections with their loved ones and community members. The show's musical moments reinforce key preschool foundations such as expressing gratitude and empathy, achieving new skills and navigating emotions.
“JJ has been a best friend to millions of kids around the world since CoComelon made its debut,” Netflix Animation Series Vice President John Derderian said in a statement. “We can’t wait for fans old and new to join JJ and his friends on CoComelon Lane as they visit new places, learn new lessons and experience some of their first big moments on Netflix this fall.”
The series builds on the tremendous success of the original CoComelon, which first debuted in 2020. Last year, the show was named Nielsen’s third-most-streamed title of 2022, with 37.8 billion minutes viewed, according to Netflix. It's on a trajectory to clinch the record for most consecutive weeks at the top of the streaming ratings, which is currently held by Grey's Anatomy with 144 weeks.
