When I was a teenager, I woke up 20 minutes earlier every day, sat on the floor in front of the mirror and burnt my hair to a crisp in an attempt to get it to lie as straight and flat against my scalp as possible.

Now, flat roots sounds like my worst hair nightmare. I love nothing more than sky-high hair. I dry my hair upside down in an attempt to get some lift and am constantly switching up the side that my parting sits on so that it has constant volume.

But sometimes, my hair just doesn’t play ball. Thanks to greasy roots and WFH bun hairstyles, it is prone is sitting limp and flat nowadays.

So, when I was given the chance to ask celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin any question I could, you better believe I asked for her advice on the quickest and easiest way to add instant volume into flat roots.

It’s a topic that Jen, who is the go-to hairstylist for Khloe Kardashian, Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid – and just so happened to style Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber’s hair for the Met – is well versed in.

“I would definitely suggest a dry shampoo,” says Jen. “I think we all know the magic of a dry shampoo and spraying it at the root can help with volume. Or, sometimes I’ll spray it onto my hand and rub it on my scalp with my hands.”

It makes sense, as well as mopping up excess oils sitting on your roots, most dry shampoos give hair a bit of grit, that makes it easier to give them lift and shape.

“You could also use a light hairspray,” Jen adds. “Spray it on a brush, tip your hair upside down and brush up from underneath. Once you’re done, use your fingers to tousle your hair.”

Or, if you’re lucky enough to own a Dyson Airwrap, Jen says that the luxe tool is her go-to “in times of need" when she's rushing. "I [tip my hair] upside down and uuse the round brush attachment to give my roots a little bit of volume," she explains.

Well, there you have it. Quick and easy ways to add instant volume to your roots. BRB, just off to stock up on some dry shampoo. If you want some, too, here are a few of my favourites…
