Many of us blow-dry our hair upside down in an attempt to get some lift at the roots, or regularly switch up the side our parting sits on to cheat constant volume.

But often, that's not enough. Greasy roots and our go-to working from home hairstyles can leave hair limp and flat.

So, when celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin shared her advice on the quickest and easiest way to add instant volume into flat roots, she had our full attention.

It’s a topic that Atkin, who is the go-to hairstylist for Khloe Kardashian, Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid – and just so happened to style Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber’s hair for the 2021 Met Gala – is well versed in.

“I would definitely suggest a dry shampoo,” says Atkin. “I think we all know the magic of a dry shampoo and spraying it at the root can help with volume. Or, sometimes I’ll spray it onto my hand and rub it on my scalp with my hands.”

It makes sense, as well as mopping up excess oils sitting on your roots, most dry shampoos give hair a bit of grit, that makes it easier to give them lift and shape.

“You could also use a light hairspray,” Atkin adds. “Spray it on a brush, tip your hair upside down and brush up from underneath. Once you’re done, use your fingers to tousle your hair.”

Or, if you own a Dyson Airwrap, Atkin says that the luxe tool is her go-to “in times of need" when she's rushing. "I [tip my hair] upside down and use the round brush attachment to give my roots a little bit of volume," she explains.

There you have it: quick and easy ways to add instant volume to your roots.
