Kendall Jenner paid homage to Old Hollywood and Audrey Hepburn at the Met Gala
Oh, how we’ve missed the Met Gala; from its extravagant red carpet style to the bold beauty looks, it really is one of the fashion industry's most exciting events.
For this year’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, many of this year’s attendees channelled modern America and celebrated classic Hollywood style.
Kendall Jenner was one such guest who offered a modern homage to Old Hollywood. She channelled one of Audrey Hepburn’s most iconic roles, that of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, in which Hepburn wore a shimmering white dress by Hubert de Givenchy - a designer that she famously collaborated with numerous times throughout her career.
Jenner was also dressed by Givenchy for this year's Met Gala, arriving in a sheer gown adorned in delicate crystals with a dramatic train. The model's dress featured a striking jewelled neckpiece and intricate shoulder pads - both clearly reminiscent of Hepburn's original version.
Like Hepburn's dress, Jenner's also featured cascading embellishments, which originated from the centre of the bodice and glistened all the way down to the end of the train. And while Hepburn paired hers with white opera gloves, Jenner opted for a more modern, sheer version of the elbow-length accessory.
Jenner explained her Old Hollywood look on the red carpet to Vogue US: "I love Audrey, so we really wanted to take a special moment of hers and make it our own and I feel like he [Matt] did an amazing job as she wore Givenchy all the time."
Givenchy's creative directory Matthew Williams added: "It was that connection with French couture and American culture."
"We were friends [Williams and Jenner] before I started at Givenchy so we hung out during the summer and worked on the dress and she came to Paris."
Williams was named Givenchy's creative director in June last year, becoming the seventh person to helm the iconic French fashion label. The designer followed Clare Waight Keller, who departed the brand in April 2020 after becoming the first woman to hold the title.
