Keep your curls hydrated this summer to avoid feeling frazzled by frizz.
As the temperatures rise, curls can be difficult to manage and hair can end up feeling parched and out of control.
“Summer heat = frizz!” Jonathan Andrew, Fudge Professional Global Brand Ambassador, insisted. “Curls need moisture, moisture, and more moisture to keep them hydrated and frizz-free.
"The key to healthy curls is condition and this needs to be the focus, make sure you are using hydrating products from wash and condition to styling products that are boosting how it looks and feels. One of the big things that affect curly hair is the lack of moisture and this is something that needs to be addressed.”
To avoid curls drying out any further, Jonathan advises against the overuse of heated appliances when styling hair.
“Try and use little to no heat where possible unless you are using a diffuser, which will help disperse the air to reduce frizz and help enhance your natural curl,” he said. “Making sure to remove most of the moisture out while your head is upright then flipping your head upside down and using the diffuser by pushing it from the ends of your hair towards the roots.”
When it comes to washing your hair, why not give Coco & Eve’s new Super Hydrating Shampoo and Cream Conditioner a try? The latest offering from the cult Balinese beauty brand is packed with powerful active ingredients, infused with a coconut and fig scent, and promises to boost moisture by 51 per cent, as well as reduce damage.
As it’s best to let hair dry naturally during the summer, make sure you maximise frizz control, create definition, and add moisture. Try spritzing something like Fudge Professional Curl Revolution Mist on wet hair and then leave locks to air dry.
Jonathan doesn’t always rely on heavy mousse products to tame tendrils, he is a fan of lightweight foams which absorb quickly with style memory for mega hold and natural movement.
He has also shared his top styling secrets for curls.
“For a more defined natural curl, take a snag-free comb and section your hair right down the middle from ear to ear so you have four sections of hair,” he explained. “Then inside each section, take a smaller section and apply your products - ensuring to twist the hair as you go. Let your hair air dry. To finish, gently shake your hair out for a more defined style.”
Intense weekly treatments are also essential for keeping curls happy - we love Vita Coco Haircare’s new Nourishing Coconut Mask which gives thirsty hair a hit of hydration from the potassium and antioxidant-rich coconut water and is formulated with 95 per cent natural ingredients.
Serum is another must-have to fight frizz and create shine, and John Frieda’s Frizz Ease range never fails to tame our tresses.
For super humid days, try spritzing Innersense’s Sweet Spirit Leave In Conditioner onto dry locks in need of rejuvenation, or if you’re struggling with knots, add to wet hair before styling for smooth and silky tresses. This product contains nutrient-rich rosemary oil, plus tamanu oil and honey so is great for detangling.
