Though it is not known if Holmes read the viral interview with Vulture, Newton talked about how she was “so scared” of Cruise on set and how he “pushed me further into a place of terror and insecurity” after encountering difficulties with a scene.
Newton said: “He was a very dominant individual. He tries super hard to be a nice person. But the pressure; he takes on a lot. And I think he has this sense that only he can do everything as best as it can be done."
She described in detail how she and Cruise had a frustrating “nightmare” rehearsal for a Mission Impossible: 2 scene together, saying that after tensions mounted, Cruise had insisted on playing her part while she played his in a bid to help her.
She said: “And it was the most unhelpful...I can’t think of anything less revealing….And less him. And I really do mean bless him, because he was trying his damndest.”
Newton continued: “I realised what he wanted. He just wanted this alpha b***h. And I did as best as I could. It’s not the best way to get the best work out of someone.”
Another of Tom Cruise’s ex-wives, Nicole Kidman, also came up in the conversation as Newton revealed she had been the one to refer her for the role on Mission Impossible: 2.
Newton also revealed that Cruise would give out Christmas gifts that had “something to do with Scientology”, including books about the religion’s “greatest hits.”
In the interview, Newton also discussed the difficulties she experienced as a Black woman in Hollywood, including her sexual assault, racial stereotyping, colorism and her guilt over playing roles that "misrepresent" the African-American community.
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise began dating in 2005 and were later married in 2006. They share a daughter, Suri Cruise, and were married for five years before divorcing. She previously commented that the period of time surrounding their public divorce was "intense." More recently she was romantically linked to actor Jamie Foxx.
