Kate Winslet has opened up about her daughter’s under the radar acting career, which she believes has been helped, in part, to their different surnames.

Winslet, who normally remains fairly private about her personal life, discussed her daughter's acting success while speaking on ITV's Lorraine on Wednesday.

'Mia's 20 and acting,' she said of her eldest child. 'She’s away just now in the Czech Republic about to start work on a TV series over there.'

Winslet co-parents her daughter, Mia Threapleton, with her first husband, filmmaker Jim Threapleton. The 20-year-old actor has two film credits under her belt already, and recently starred as the lead character Alma in the 2020 independent film Shadows.

The Titanic star continued, noting that it's been 'wonderful' watching her daughter follow in her footsteps.

She said: 'I think I knew it was coming, I always suspected. And then a few years ago she turned around and said, "I think I would like to give it a go."'

Winslet noted that her daughter’s different surname has been 'really great' in helping distance herself from her mother's fame and success in auditions.

'What's been really great for her is that she has a different surname, so that initial job out of the gate, she slipped right under the radar and the people who cast her had absolutely no idea she was my daughter,' said the 45-year-old actor. 'And, of course, that was my biggest fear.'

The Oscar winner continued, explaining that her daughter's ability to enter Hollywood without others knowing her family connections was 'most important for her self-esteem'.

Last November, Threapleton opened up about her Shadows role in an interview with Variety. The star revealed that the movie was 'the first film I'd received an audition for and the first script I had ever been given to read.

'I had just finished school, was free of exam hell, and felt excited, nervous and ready to start auditioning for things, and hoping that the opportunities to audition would come my way,' she told the publication. 'I just hoped I would get the chance to do what I had wanted to do for so long!'

The young actor also discussed what it was like growing up with a famous mother.

'It was always a special treat,' Threapleton said of the rare moments she'd join her mother at work, adding: 'It's a very different experience when it is happening to you, and not just something I was getting to observe from time to time. I really understand why my mum has always impressed on us how hard the work is. She is right! And I loved every second of it.'
