Kate and William 'considering Windsor move' to be closer to the Queen

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are reportedly 'seriously considering' relocating to Windsor so that they can be closer to the Queen.

The royal couple have been looking at accommodation options in the area which are suitable for their three children – Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and three-year-old Prince Louis – according to the Mail on Sunday. This could indicate that Kate and William are about to take on more senior roles within the royal family.

At the moment, the Cambridge family split their time between their residence in Kensington Palace, where their offices are also based, and their country home of Anmer Hall, in Norfolk, on the Queen's Sandringham Estate.

Anmer Hall was a wedding gift from the Queen, and the couple made it their permanent residence between 2015 and 2017.

If based permanently in Windsor, the duke and duchess would be able to commute into London more easily when required, and would also be closer to Kate’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, who live in Bucklebury.

'Anmer Hall made sense while William was a helicopter pilot in East Anglia and it was useful for Christmases at Sandringham, but it doesn’t really work any more. It’s a little too far away for weekends, but Windsor is a perfect compromise. They are eyeing up options in the area,' a source told the publication.

The Queen moved to Windsor Castle indefinitely after the Covid outbreak in March last year. Windsor holds a special significance for the monarch too, as it is where Prince Philip, her husband of 73 years, has been buried and it’s where the royal couple previously spent every Easter together. As is tradition, Her Majesty will still spend summer at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Christmas at Sandringham House.
