The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have shared a new photo of Prince Louis to mark two milestones in his young life.

Kate took the photo of Louis on Wednesday as he headed off to nursery for the first time. The portrait has also been released to celebrate his third birthday, today.

In the picture, Louis can be seen wearing his nursery uniform of blue shorts, a blue jumper and a striped blue shirt, with matching backpack, while sitting on a red bike.

Kate and William said they were 'pleased' to share the unofficial family photo of Louis.

Just like Princess Charlotte, he now attends the Willcocks Nursery School which is situated near the Albert Hall in London – just a stone's throw from the Cambridges' official residence, Kensington Palace.

Louis is following in the footsteps of his father by attending a private nursery school. The tradition began when Princess Diana – a former nursery assistant – sent Prince William to Minors Nursery School in Notting Hill Gate in 1985. Prince Harry then followed, joining Mrs Mynor's Nursery School nearby in 1987.

Since then, all three of the Cambridges' children have been enrolled at private nurseries. Prince George attended the Westacre Montessori School Nursery near the Cambridges' Norfolk residence Anmer Hall in Sandringham, while Princess Charlotte, and now Prince Louis, joined Willcocks.

The Cambridges' eldest two children now attend St Thomas' School in Battersea, which is just across the river from the palace.

Kate is a keen photographer and often shares pictures she has taken of her children to mark special occasions and milestones. Most recently, she has been documenting their lives in lockdown at Anmer Hall.
