Today, members of the royal family and heads of state from around the world have gathered at Westminster Abbey for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, to say their final goodbyes to Britain's longest-serving monarch.

Catherine, the new Princess of Wales, attended the service with her two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. As is customary, the royal paid her respects to the late Queen by wearing an all-black mourning outfit, including a veiled black hat, a coat dress and matching heels.

But there was one rather special detail in the form of her jewellery. Kate paid homage to Her Majesty by wearing pearls. Kate's drop earrings were pearl, as was her matching multi-strand bracelet. It was her four-row Japanese pearl choker necklace that carried the most meaning. The iconic piece featured a curved diamond clasp and once belonged to the Queen herself.

The Queen, who first loaned the impressive piece to Kate in 2017, also previously loaned the choker to Diana, the former Princess of Wales, in 1982 for a state visit from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

Kate's pearl drop earrings were also part of the Queen's jewellery collection. The 1940s-style earrings feature simple diamond studs and dropped pearls. She was seen wearing the same jewellery combination to the funeral of Prince Philip in April 2021, following the Queen's lead in allowing her jewellery to convey messages and carry symbolic weight.

Pearls are not only known as a trademark of the Queen, who was famously rarely seen without a three or four strand pearl necklace, but an established royal code for mourning. For this reason, many of the royals have been seen sporting pearls in the last week. Kate also wore pearls to view the Queen's coffin during the lying-in-state service, and wore the Queen's pearl and diamond brooch for the procession of the coffin.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, also paid tribute to Her Majesty through her choice of jewellery for the funeral, by wearing a pair of pearl stud earrings, which were gifted to her in 2018 for her wedding to Prince Harry, by the Queen.
