The Duchess of Cambridge posted a rare, personal message to royal fans on Instagram on Sunday, 9 January, thanking them for their birthday wishes as she turned 40.

In the short caption, signed 'C' for Catherine, Kate wrote: "Thank you for all of your very kind birthday wishes, and to Paolo and the National Portrait Gallery for these three special portraits."

The thank you message was shared alongside one of the three stunning new portraits taken of Kate to mark her big birthday. The three pictures, taken by photographer Paolo Roversi, will be displayed in a permanent exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, of which Kate is royal patron.

In the new photographs, snapped at Kew Gardens, Kate looks effortlessly elegant and regal, wearing gowns created by Alexander McQueen, the same design house that made her wedding dress in 2011.

Kate's hair is worn down in a natural, wavy blow-dry, while her outfits are completed with stunning jewels of special significance, including her engagement ring and her late mother-in-law Princess Diana's Collingwood pearl and diamond earrings.

Many happy returns to the duchess!
