Just like that, Kate Middleton and Prince William's youngest child Prince Louis turns four today (23 April), and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge marked the occasion by sharing new photos of him, taken by Kate of course.

Louis appears in the photos – which were shared on the eve of his birthday – barefoot on the beach, wearing a grey star print jumper, over a checked shirt and green shorts. Showing off his sporty side, the young prince is pictured running and holding a cricket ball in the two lovely shots.

“4 years old tomorrow!” the Cambridges wrote on their Instagram, crediting the duchess for the photos.

Louis's life has been largely kept private but we have had some insights into his personality.

Kate spoke about Louis's tendency to end calls in a BBC interview during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and its quarantine. “It gets a bit hectic, I'm not going to lie,” she said of video calling their families. “With a two-year-old you have to take the phone away. It's quite hectic for them all to say the right thing at the right time without pressing the wrong buttons. But it's great and it's nice to keep in touch with everybody.”
