Kate Middleton just nailed the perfect casual ponytail

Despite being my go-to hairstyle on the playground, I’ve started to find ponytails a bit hit or miss as I’ve gotten older.

Mainly because no matter how much I scrape my hair back, my ponytails tend to just sit flat and limp. Even if I take it right to the top of my head, a la Ariana Grande. Or, even if I tie it suuuper tight – though not as tight at Hailey Bieber, whose ponytail once left her with a bald spot.

So, when I saw Kate Middleton making her latest royal appearance, I was in awe of the way she pulled off the perfect casual ponytail.

Her hair was loosely brushed back, so that there was still volume in her roots and we’re assuming it was given a healthy dose of hairspray to avoid flyaways and add a coating of shine.

As for the ponytail itself, it somehow didn’t sit flat – instead, the Duchess’ ponytail had some lift from where it's tied. Maybe the secret lies in the type of hair tie she used? Or maybe it was backcombed at the root of the pony? Either way, this kind of perfect ponytail is complete sorcery if you ask me. Swipe to see it from the back, too:

Kate’s appearance was at an event celebrating photography book Hold Still: A Portrait of Our Nation in 2020, a collection of 100 pictures that sum up our experiences of 2020 and lockdown.

The book was made in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, of which Kate is patron, and while it came out earlier this year, celebrations were put on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions.

We’re so glad they could finally raise a glass to all their hard work!
