The Duchess of Cambridge is due to give birth to her and husband Prince William’s first child in mid-July.

According to the Palace, the little prince or princess will be a summer baby but is unlikely to share the Queen’s official birthday (June 16th).

The date reveals that the Duchess, often still referred to as Kate Middleton, was around just seven weeks when the news of her pregnancy was first revealed after to a bout of severe morning sickness.

Kate was hospitalised for several days with suspected hyperemesis gravidarum but has since made several public appearances suggesting her pregnancy is back on track.

The statement from the palace suggests Kate has now had her 12 week scan and included an update on Kate’s illness, saying: "The Duchess's condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month."

The 31-year-old Duchess surprised viewers by arriving on stage to present Bradley Wiggins the award for Sports Personality of the Year and last week attended the National Gallery for a private view of her first portrait as a member of the Royal Family.

And the good news for Kate is that now the often-difficult first trimester is over, she should be saying goodbye to morning sickness and entering the ‘glow’ phase of pregnancy.

It is during this trimester that the excited parents will be able to discover the sex of their baby (if they want to) and many mums-to-be rate trimester two as their favourite time.

Hormones even out so emotions and mood can be more balanced and in most cases energy levels increase. The palace may be banking on this as it also suggested Kate will shortly be back on royal duty.

The baby will be developing fast and enters its most active phase of development – though the kicks won’t be felt until somewhere around 18 to 22 weeks.

He or she will grow from the size of a lime to the size of a small butternut squash during this trimester so in not such good news for Kate, the eyes of the world will be on stalks for the first signs of that baby bump.
