Kate Garraway shared a moving Father's Day tribute to her husband Derek yesterday (21 June), giving an update on her family and how they're coping.
Derek was admitted to intensive care on 30 March after contracting coronavirus and on 17 April, Kate told fans her husband was in a "deeply critical" condition.
"Derek remains in intensive care and is still very ill. I’m afraid it remains an excruciatingly worrying time. The NHS team who have been working on him have all been extraordinary and I know that it’s only their professionalism, dedication and bravery that has kept Derek with us so far. I also know that they’re working just as hard on all the patients in their care," she said at the time.
"It’s hard to find the right words because thank you alone isn’t enough but I do thank them because I know Derek would if he could."
On 5 June, Kate explained in an interview with Good Morning Britain that although Derek is now testing negative for COVID-19, he remains "very, very sick".
Following that emotional TV interview, Kate didn't share any updates on her social media, until her touching Father's Day post.
"Happy Fathers Day to all the wonderful Daddy’s out there. A tough day for us but am filled with so much love & gratitude to still have for my Dad “Trinity “ - thats my Dad Gordon , Derek’s dad Ken and of course Derek himself ( officially the Best Dad in the World according to Darcey & Billy," Kate said.
"All three of them never happier than when they are with their children. I’m so grateful to have you still in our lives - & know so many today don’t have that. But the love is there - no separation can change that," she added.
Kate thanked her followers for their messages of support after her TV interview, before talking about her hope for the future.
"Whatever happens next I’m afraid it IS going to be a long road, with an uncertain end that isn’t even nearly in sight right now. BUT. This week I am refocusing on hope that as a family we are going to pull together with the support of friends and get through everything come what may. Hope- because I know that the amazing people keeping Derek alive, stand shoulder to shoulder with me in NEVER giving up on him and, of course, hope that my wonderful Derek is going to keep fighting this and eventually start to slowly recover.
"After all we are all having to do that aren’t we in one way or another - this ghastly time has affected us all & life deals us blows that we just have to bounce back from & celebrate the good. This Father’s Day I am sending you all the love & positivity in the world - let’s seek out the joy!"
