Kate Garraway has described the ongoing battle her husband is facing after contracting coronavirus last year.

The Good Morning Britain presenter shared that she was unsure if Derek, 53, would "ever have any kind of life again," as she discussed his long recovery from coronavirus.

Although Derek no longer has the virus, his body has been ravaged by the disease and as a result he is still in hospital.

Speaking to the Sunday Times Magazine, Kate said: “The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in forever. And I just thought - this is a horror story. I don’t know if he’ll ever have any kind of life again. We just don’t know."

The interview marks a year since Derek first fell ill and was admitted to hospital and placed in an induced coma. As a result of Covid he had kidney failure, liver and pancreatic damage and lost eight stone.

Kate revealed that once Derek was taken out of the coma he didn’t wake up, and at one point, Kate was wrongly told he may have died after a hospital worked mixed him up with another patient. As well as physical changes in her husband, Kate said Derek’s moments of consciousness were fleeting.

“I feel like he is in an ocean of unconsciousness and sometimes he comes up to the surface. The focus of the concentration disappears, and he’s gone.”

Because of lockdown Kate and her children Darcey, 15 and William 11 have been unable to visit and haven’t seen him since December.

While her husband of 15 years' illness has devastated Kate's family emotionally, it has also had huge impacts financially.

She says the worse part of not having her husband at home, is having no one to share her interest in their children.

Kate said: “It’s actually about sharing the joy that I miss with Derek. It’s about when Billy says something preposterous, or Darcey says something cheeky. That’s when I miss him the most.”
